It’s got a wide focal range, so you can capture everything from wide landscapes to close-up portraits. The image stabilization keeps your shots sharp, even at long focal lengths. While the variable aperture isn’t ideal for low-light situations, it’s a great option for everyday shooting.

This is just a starting point, of course. There are so many great lenses out there for the Canon EOS RP. But these are the ones that have really impressed me so far.

1. Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM

Best for: Portraits, Low Light, and Beginners

If you only buy one lens after your kit lens, make it this one. Known as the "Nifty Fifty," this lens is tiny, incredibly sharp, and dirt cheap (usually under $200).

• Why it fits the RP: It weighs almost nothing (160g). While the f/1.2 version I previously recommended is legendary, it costs 10x more and creates a front-heavy imbalance on the small RP body. This f/1.8 version gives you beautiful background blur (bokeh) for portraits without breaking the bank or your back.

2. Canon RF 24–105mm f/4–7.1 IS STM

Best for: Everyday "Walk-Around" Use

This is the modern essential for the EOS RP. While the "L" version (f/4 constant) is great, this variable aperture version is significantly smaller and lighter.

• Why I love it: It covers everything from wide landscapes to zoom portraits. It also features a unique "Center Focus Macro" mode that lets you get incredibly close to subjects for creative wide-angle macro shots. It is the ultimate travel companion for when you want to carry just one lens.

3. Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM

Best for: Landscapes, Vlogging, and Architecture

This is a lens that didn't exist a few years ago, and it is a must-have. It is an ultra-wide prime that is the size of a bottle cap.

• The Upgrade: Previously, I recommended the manual-focus Rokinon 14mm. You can retire that now. The RF 16mm gives you autofocus, native electronics, and a fast f/2.8 aperture for astrophotography, all in a package that fits in your pocket. It’s superb for vlogging because it’s wide enough to keep your face and the background in the frame while holding the camera.

4. Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM

Best for: Street Photography and Detail Shots

This lens remains on the list because it is unmatched in versatility. 35mm is the classic storytelling focal length—perfect for street photography, environmental portraits, and indoor family shots.

• Key Feature: Unlike most prime lenses, this has Image Stabilization (IS). Since the EOS RP does not have In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS), having IS in the lens is crucial for getting sharp handheld shots in low light. Plus, the semi-macro capability lets you capture amazing details of food, flowers, or wedding rings.

5. Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM

Best for: Wildlife, Sports, and Zoo Trips

Telephoto lenses used to be heavy, white, and expensive. This lens changes the rules. It allows you to zoom all the way to 400mm to capture birds, sports, or distant mountains.

• Why it fits the RP: It is shockingly light for a lens with this reach. The autofocus is lightning fast (Nano USM), making it easy to track moving subjects. It’s an affordable gateway into wildlife photography that balances perfectly on the RP.

6. Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM

Best for: Headshot Portraits

If you want those professional-looking headshots where the background completely melts away, you need an 85mm.

• The Value: This lens is sharp, stabilized (5 stops of IS), and includes macro capabilities. It is much more affordable than the f/1.2 "L" version but still delivers that professional compression that flatters facial features.

7. Canon RF 24–240mm f/4–6.3 IS USM

Best for: The "One Lens" Traveler

This remains the king of all-in-one zooms. If you are going on a vacation and refuse to change lenses, this is the one to bring.

• The Range: It goes from true wide-angle (24mm) to serious telephoto (240mm). The image stabilization is excellent (essential at 240mm), and the autofocus is nearly silent for video. It’s heavier than the other lenses on this list, but it replaces a whole bag of gear.
